Beginning in April 2018, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services- (CMS) will be removing Social Security Numbers (SSNs) from Medicare identification cards in an effort to combat identity theft. The current Social Security Number-based Health Insurance Claim Number will be replaced by a randomly generated Medicare Beneficiary Identifier. Up until now, CMS referred to this work as the Social Security Number Removal Initiative. Moving forward, the agency will refer to this project as the New Medicare Card. To assist physician practices in communicating this ID card change to Medicare patients, CMS has developed a new resource. Access additional CMS provider resources.
