Group Insurance Board Delays Action on Self-Insurance

The Group Insurance Board has delayed a decision on potential changes to the health plan for state employees, including whether to shift to a regional or self-insurance model, until January.

"During closed session, the board met to assess and deliberate on the many options that were presented," Michael Farrell, board chair, said Tuesday afternoon. "The board has asked staff and Segal to gather more data and to continue deliberations. As you know there is much complexity and volumes of information that relate to our consideration and, of course, we're not taking these decisions lightly."

"We have not taken any action at all today," he continued. "We are not taking action in closed session nor will we take any action in open session and the board will reconvene in January."

The board weighed seven proposals offered by the Department of Employee Trust Funds staff in a memo presented to the board Tuesday.
