What Is an Ambulatory Surgery Center?

Ambulatory Surgery Centers (ASCs) are modern healthcare facilities designed to provide safe, high-quality surgical care without the need for an overnight hospital stay.

ASCs offer a convenient and patient-centered alternative for many surgical and specialty procedures, allowing patients to return home the same day.

Across Wisconsin, ASCs play an important role in expanding access to care while delivering high-quality, cost-effective services. With dedicated teams, specialized expertise, and a focus on the patient experience, Wisconsin’s ASCs help patients receive the right care and outcome.

Understanding What ASCs Are Not

Ambulatory Surgery Centers (ASCs) are distinct from urgent care facilities, primary care practices, rural health clinics, and other outpatient facilities that primarily provide diagnostic or routine medical services.

ASCs are specifically designed for surgical care. Patients typically arrive at an ASC after a physician or other qualified healthcare provider has determined that a surgical procedure is appropriate. Unlike a primary care or urgent care setting, ASCs do not serve as a general point of entry for diagnosing and treating everyday illnesses and medical conditions.

ASCs are also different from a typical physician’s office. They are licensed and equipped to safely perform surgical procedures, with dedicated operating or procedure rooms, specialized surgical equipment, trained clinical staff, and the resources necessary to monitor and care for patients before, during, and after surgery.
