Congratulations to Jane Cerra, Clinical Quality Review RN, Advanced Pain Management as the first WISCA Nurse of the Month Awardee! Jane was nominated by Karen Bewer and here is a bit more about Jane and why she deserves the award.

Jane doesn't take care of patients; she takes care of the people who take care of patients. I couldn't do my job without her. In a leadership workshop last year, I was asked: Who packs your parachute? Meaning who has your back, who do you depend on for the most important details in your position? My answer was and is Jane Cerra---she exemplifies Nursing Excellence.

Excellent in clinical practice

Jane has worked for our organization since 2015. I was looking for a nurse that could be a resource for the nurses working in our Ambulatory Surgery Centers. I wanted a mock survey done at each site, a few times each year. I wanted someone who could observe the staff, with the Joint Commission Standards and the CMS Conditions for Coverage in mind. That was the easy part. When she observed the staff in their patient care role, and if they weren't following our policies or the standards or CfC, I wanted her to correct the staff in a way that wouldn't make them feel bad and would be gentle, yet firm. Jane knows our policies and the standards like she has worked in an ASC all her life. Her critical thinking skills and her ability to problem solve with staff is unparalleled.

Compassionate with patients and families

Jane is a compassionate and kind nurse. She always answers questions with a smile and if ever a staff member feels silly for asking a question, by the end of the conversation, Jane's attitude has made them happy that they asked her. She introduces herself and spends time with patients and families and lets them know why she is there. She makes them feel at ease and shows them someone cares enough to be a resource for staff and makes certain that their care is the safest and highest quality possible.

Committed to team collaboration

Jane is a leader in any team. She knows how to rally the troops when a problem presents itself and she makes sure that their opinions count when they disagree with a process or procedure or with her ideas. She works collaboratively with our physicians and they are happy to see her walk in the door of our ASCs. For someone who functions in a role as the internal surveyor, asking the same questions that our regulatory agency and bodies ask, I am always a little surprised to see how glad the staff is when Jane is around and they can ask questions and get excellent answers.
